“A paradise, wrote in its dairy wan of the first tourists on the Algarve, Robert Southey In 1801.
At the beginning of the century , the visitors to the beaches of the region were locals and some Spanish. From the 60 on the development of the tourism in the Algarve was given a great jump to our days.
The main attractions are, without a doubt, the excellent weather conditions, and more than three thousand hours of sun per year.
On the other hand the unknown Algarve exists.
The folklore, the hospitality, the parties, this is reason enough to take the time to discover the region.
The Algarve
Geographically it is divided in three zones:
The Coast, the most known, where the extensive sand beaches are.
The agrarian landscape. It is characterized, mainly, by fruit trees as the citruses, almonds tree and carob trees.
The Mountain range is the less known part of the Algarve. Isolated until middle of this century, It conserves its natural beauty. Composed, the east, for the Mountain range of the Caldeirão, the west, for the Mountain range of Mochique
The Region
It is composed of 5,412 square kilometers with approximately 410,000 permanent inhabitants. This figure increases to over several times at the height of summer due to an influx of tourists. The Algarve has several cities, towns and villages. The region is also the home of the Ria Formosa lagoon, a nature reserve of over 170 square kilometers and a stopping place for hundreds of different birds. The region's capital is the city of Faro. The length of the south-facing coastline is approximately 155 kilometers.
